Bed Bugs – Dublin, Ireland

Bed Bugs are very small roundish, flat parasitic insects and scientifically known as Cimex.  Their colour is a reddish-brown when adults.  Bed Bugs are blood sucking insects with their food being the blood from animals and humans.  Bed bugs and aptly named since their territory is often beds, bed rooms and such environments where it’s easy to prey on their hosts. Bed Bugs are attracted by the heat that emanates from the human body as well as the carbon dioxide you breath out.  Once you’re asleep they will crawl out, with their prick, they excrete saliva that is an anesthetic so you don’t notice they are feeding on you.   Once they have pricked you, they will feed on you for up to 5 minutes.

What do bedbugs look like?

Bedbugs are small, oval, light reddish-brown insects up to 5 mm long and 2mm wide as adults. Depending on whether they have fed, the can change their colour from a light brownish red to a dark brownish red and when fully fed they can appear round; full of blood.

What do bed bug bites look like?

A bed bug bite generally looks like a red blotch.   Often bed bugs will bite in the same area so if you have many red blotches appear – sometimes in an orderly line – you may have bed bugs.   Bed bug bits can have different affects – from skin rashes, to alergic reactions.  As with all bites, scratching should be avoided in order to not open the skin up making it prone to infection.lt in swelling and could lead to an infection.

Are bed bug bits infectious or dangerous?

Apart from skin rash possibly allergic reactions, bed bugs are not know to be dangerous.

Bed Bug Signs – How do I know if I have Bed bugs?

Bed bugs leave big red blotches on your skin and this is the first sign that you could have them.  Following this, look for red or brown spots in the mattress. You can check for Bed Bugs in cracks or crevices in and around the bed, the mattress, under the bed, skirting and bedside tables.

Should I throw my bedding out?

This is not always necessary. Bedding, including blankets and mattresses can be very costly. While bedbugs would’t necessarily be able to get inside your bedding (they are after all the size of ants approximately).   However their eggs can be nestled on your bedding and this would at least give you cause to thoroughly clean them at the highest possible temperatures.

Where do you find bed bugs usually?

Bedbugs mostly sit on or around the bed frame or head board.  They have even been found hiding in shoes, alarm clocks and general storage under the bed.

How do you get bed bugs?

Living spaces can get bed bugs numerous ways:

• Carried in (bed bugs or their eggs) brought in from other premises that are infested by pets or human clothes/bags
• Neighbouring premises have bed bugs and they travel through wall cracks/ducts etc.
• Infested clothing or items from another infested area brought into the house.
• Staying at a hotel with an infestation (or an infestation that is ‘kept under control’ by the hotel).  This is by far the most common cause.
• Visitors at your premises have brought them in from their house.
